On October 8, 2008, the UMHS Book Club met during D-Back hour for the second time. After reading silently and then having a short book discussion, the group was treated to a talk by Mr. Blockus, chairperson for the English department. Mr. Blockus discussed the process that the English department went through before selecting a book that English 2 students would read in addition to The Kite Runner. The hands-down winner was A Long Way Gone by Ismael Beah. The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay and Kaffir Boy, the True Story of Black Youth’s Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa by Mark Mathabane were considered but lost once Mr. Blockus read and was captivated by A Long Way Gone.
All of these books are available in the UMHS library.
The next Book Club Meeting is November 5 and Mrs. Munz Luther (Social Studies teacher) will be our guest.
I just finished Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil by Deborah Rodriquez (available in our biography section.) I love books that explore different cultures. In this book, Debbie joins an international volunteer group who goes to Kabul, Afghanistan. She feels rather useless when she discovers the other volunteers are all doctors and nurses. Since she is a hairdresser back home, she decides that she could help out the Afghan women by opening a beauty school. Debbie quickly becomes immersed in the culture of women who live behind the veil. What they think about beauty and we Americans think about beauty are two completely different things! Don’t miss reading this book! (Mrs. Hamilton)
This exciting science fiction book is one of the 3 books nominated by California teens this year for the California Young Reader’s Medal award. 16 year-old Miranda’s world is forever changed when a meteor hits the moon. What the scientists predicted as a minor impact is in fact a catastrophic collision that knocks the moon off its orbit and removes a huge chunk. High tides and tsunamis wipe out coasts worldwide, volcanoes erupt, and electricity disappears. This books is full of suspense–you won’t be able to put it down!
Can’t wait to share my favorite summer reads with everyone! Discovered Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum mystery series. Silly and sillier…can’t get enough (just like chocolate)!
Coming this Fall…a book club at UMHS ! Come learn about it during an upcoming D-Back hour. We’ll be reviewing and discussing books on this blog. Join in on the fun! In the meantime, check out the books at the El Dorado County Library.
